Sassoon
Violin - Antonio Stradivari, 1733
“The violin is extremely beautiful with chocolaty, dark reddish-brown varnish that has never been French polished. It is intact and unmarred. Clearly the violin was made by an old man; Stradivari was 89 when he made it. There is some shakiness in the carving, but it is a very great violin. I have always felt that listening to the Sassoon is surely an experience too rich, too caloric to be entirely good for you. James Ehnes’ performance of Manuel de Falla’s ‘Nana’ never fails to bring tears to my eyes. ”
